Legalizations

One of the functions of the Consulate is to establish the authenticity of documents for international use. To be valid in Panama, most documents – public or private – must be legalized or authenticated, unless they bear an apostille (public certification used in countries that are in compliance with the provisions of the 1961 Hague Convention).

LEGALIZATION:

  • Documents from only these states can be authenticated by the Consulate of Panama in New York: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Rhode Island.
  • Official document to be authenticated must be an original document or certified copy with original seal and signature.
  • Original private documents must be signed in front of a Panamanian Consulate Official or endorsed by a Notary Public of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, or Rhode Island.
  • The Panama Consular Fee is $30.00 per signature to be legalized.
  • Diplomas and School Transcripts: When it has been issued within the last six (6) months there is no cost for authentication for Panamanian citizens. Documents older than that are $30.00 per signed document.

When sent by mail, documents to be legalized must include a self-addressed prepaid envelope for their return; we recommend using prepaid courier services such as Fedex, UPS or TNT. Please also include a written request indicating the name, address and telephone number of the applicant to be contacted for any required additional information.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CONSULATE OF PANAMA IN NEW YORK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOST DOCUMENTS OR DELAY WHILE IN TRANSIT.

Processing Time: 2-3 Business days

*** All fees must be paid by money order or certified bank checks made out to The Consulate of Panama. Personal checks are not accepted. Cash will only be accepted if applying in person.
