Proof of Life

The proof of life is exempt from payment and certifies the survival of those who receive a pension or retirement check from the Social Security Fund of Panama.

These certifications are made every 6 months or annually depending on your case. Please contact the Social Security Fund to verify your case.

You can apply for the proof of life in our offices. However, it is NOT NECESSARY to come in person. You also have the option of doing it through a notary public. In this case, please request the proof of life through notarization form.

You must enclose a copy of the Panamanian social security identification, a copy of the cedula or a valid passport and a pre-paid envelope for the return of your documents.

In case that your Panamanian ID is expired, present an additional copy of a valid ID.

Processing time: Usually the same day (in person)

Cost: Exempt

Authentication of Documents

All documents to be authenticated must be original or a certified copy. They must have a legible print name of the original signer, seal, and signature.

If these are private documents and in case of not being able to sign before a consular officer, they must be duly notarized by a notary public of our jurisdiction (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts or Vermont.)

If you sign before a consular officer, you must present valid identification and make sure that the name exactly matches the document to be authenticated. 

Cost: $ 30.00 for each signature to authenticate. 

Only money order is accepted payable to the Consulate of Panama or cash if applicable in person. 

Processing time: it is 2 to 3 business days. 

When sending your documents, please include your contact information and a self-addressed prepaid envelope for the return of your documents.   

It is recommended to use FedEx Courier.

Other acceptable services available are: USPS Priority or Express Mail, UPS, or DHL 

**** You must coordinate the pickup of the package from our offices. 

**** The Consulate of Panama is not responsible for locating packages or loss documents once processed. It is recommended to use a tracking number to locate your own documents.

Panamanian cedula renewal or duplicates

The following will not be processed at the Consulate: 

  • Cedula for the first time
  • Juvenile cedula
  • Foreigner cedula  

*** These cases must be processed in the offices of the Electoral Tribunal in the National Territory.

Passport renewal

You may renew your passport with us if belong to our jurisdiction if you reside in the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts or Vermont. If you reside in another state, please contact the nearest Consulate. 


REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Valid Panamanian cedula
  2. Last passport. If loss, file a police report or loss form with the Consulate
  3. 2 photos (2x2) in colors with white background (see photo requirements)

 

***If you have never had a cedula or have expired cedula: 

You must complete a Consultation process application subject to approval (approximately 4 to 6 weeks) by the Panamanian Passport Authority, submitting the following requirements: 

  1. Valid ID with name as it appears registered in Panama, photo and signature and printed name.
  2. Last passport. If loss, file a police report or loss form with the Consulate.
  3. 2 photos (2x2) in colors with a white background (see photo requirements).
  4. Birth Certificate 

MINORS PASSPORTS:

  1. Juvenile cedula or valid identification
  2. Last passport. If loss, file a police report or loss form with the Consulate
  3. 2 photos (2x2) in colors with white background (see photo requirements)
  4. Letter of authorization signed by both parents before the consulate.a. If one of the parents is out of the country, must approach the nearest consulate.b. Valid passport or ID of both parents.c. In special cases, for example: if one of the parents has custody of the child or if one has died, the original certificates of custody of the court or death must be provided

Processing time: approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

PHOTOS REQUIREMENTS:

 Two photos Passport size (2x2) that fulfill the OACI requirements:

  1. Size 2x2
  2. White background
  3. Posture and frontal view
  4. Neutral facial expression
  5. Ears must be visible. Only a pair of small earrings is allowed in women. No earrings allowed for men.
  6. No piercings.
  7. No hair accessories or high up do or extravagant hair styles.
  8. No off shoulder, cleavage showing or White blouses.
  9. No hoodies.
  10. No glasses nor colored contact lenses.
  11. Neutral facial expressions, no smiles or do not show teeth.

Travel Document

You belong to our jurisdiction if you reside in the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts or Vermont. If you reside in another state, please contact the nearest Consulate for your paperwork.


This document will allow you to travel only to Panama in case you do not have a valid passport or it will soon expire.

Subsequently, you must arrange the passport renewal in the offices of Panama and your cedula if it is expired. 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Passport expired or soon to expire. If loss, file a police report or loss form with the Consulate
  2. Panamanian ID or valid ID
  3. Copy of birth certificate4. 2 2x2 photos with white background

 

Processing time: 3 to 5 business days.

Traveling with minors

The Immigration Supervisors of Panama allow the departure of minors to foreign territory only if they are accompanied by both parents.

 

In the absence of one or both parents, a letter of authorization authenticated by the Consulate of Panama will be required. 

 

All authenticated authorization letters will be sent by the Consulate, courtesy to the official email of the Immigration supervisors of Panama. However, we recommend having the original document in hand.  

 

Attach copies of original birth certificate or copy of the minor.  

 

Authentication processing time: 2 to 3 business days.

 

Traveling with Pets

A certificate of good health of export of small animals issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) must be submitted at the Tocumen airport upon arrival.

This document must be previously duly:

  1. Certified by the pet's veterinarian
  2. Endorsed by an official USDA APHIS veterinarian
  3. Authenticated by the Consulate of Panama (once obtained certification and endorsement)

You can obtain the form through the veterinarian by accessing the website of the United States Department of Agriculture.

NOTE: It is recommended to check with the airline for more information on regulations to determine regulations and additional requirements.

Birth Registration for minors of Panamanian parents born abroad

Article 101 of law 31 of July 25, 2006, "CAN NOT REGISTER AS PANAMANIAN, THE CHILDREN BORN ABROAD OF PANAMANIAN PARENTS IF SUCH PARENT WOULD NOT HAVE ACQUIRED THE PANAMANIAN NATIONALITY BEFORE THEIR BIRTH".


Birth registrations can be made directly through the Tribunal Electoral in Panama or through the Consulate of Panama. 

The Consulate of Panama can only register the birth of a minor child born abroad of Panamanian parents. If the interested party is of legal age (18 years or older), he must make the birth registration directly in the Civil Registry, Tribunal Electoral de Panama. 

The following states belong to the jurisdiction of the Consulate of Panama in New York: New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island. For other states, please contact the nearest Consulate in your jurisdiction.

REQUIREMENTS TO REGISTER MINORS IN THE CONSULATE

Provide the following: 

  • Original birth certificate to be authenticated by the Consulate 
  • Translation of the birth certificate into Spanish by a public translator of our authorized jurisdiction in the United States, to be authenticated by the Consulate

The cost of documents to authenticate is $30.00 each.

Only documents belonging to our jurisdiction can be authenticated: New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island. 

  • The Panamanian parent must submit an affidavit/sworn statement and provide a valid Panamanian cedula. The processing time of the affidavit is 10 business days. Must make an appointment to sign the final affidavit
  •  Both parents must be present and provide a valid ID. If Panamanian must provide Panamanian cedula. If the parent is from another nationality, provide a valid passport 
  • You must bring two witnesses and provide valid IDs. If Panamanian must provide Panamanian cedula. If from another nationality, provide a valid passport

Marriage Registration

Marriage registrations can be made directly through the Tribunal Electoral in Panama or through the Consulate of Panama.  

REQUIREMENTS

  • Original marriage certificate to be authenticated by the Consulate 
  • Translation of the marriage certificate into Spanish by a public translator of our authorized jurisdiction in the United States, to be authenticated by the Consulate

Only documents belonging to our jurisdiction can be authenticated: New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island.  

  • Both spouses must be present and provide a valid ID.  Panamanian spouse must provide Panamanian cedula. Spouse from another nationality, provide a valid passport
  • You must bring two witnesses and provide valid IDs. If the witness is Panamanian, must provide Panamanian cedula. If the person is from another nationality, provide a valid passport

Death Registration

Death registrations can be made directly through the Tribunal Electoral in Panama or through the Consulate of Panama. 

The request can be made only by the surviving spouse, parents, siblings or children of the deceased.  

REQUIREMENTS

  • Original death certificate to be authenticated by the Consulate 
  • Translation of the death certificate into Spanish by a public translator of our authorized jurisdiction in the United States, to be authenticated by the Consulate
